jello

my name is Justin but ill answer to just about any J name so long as its directed at me lol. i decided to join your group because its really not all that fun being the only person i know who is atheist. i plan on making it out to one of your meet ups. not sure how soon though due to a little thing called social anxiety. if i can con a friend to go with me then ill be golden.

i fancy myself as a pretty laid back guy who is extremely tolerant of others views but its hard when so few are tolerant of me being atheist. i believe in equal treatment for everyone and special treatment for no one (as Jesse James puts it).

I was raised in a rather large step family of 6 then grew to 7. all christian. but i was quick to pick up on the odd cult like ways of the faith and started questioning it early on. stopped attending church around 16 much to my parents disliking. went from christian to agnostic and then full on atheist around 25. being 31 now im very comfortable with my beliefs and am not shy to people knowing but i don't flaunt it by any means.

that's about it in a nutshell.

shucks, still haven't made it out to any event.... stuck in bed with flu and who knows what else. Hopefully things will be more active with me when I get a decent car within the next month or so... until then, I shall sniffle and cough and sound like a muppet (thats actually pretty amusing to me) huddled in bed surrounded by blankets and kittehs... need more soup -_-

Hi, I'm Stella and I've lived in San Antonio for about 3 1/2 years. I've lived all over the country and a few places outside the country as well. After spending my entire life as a devoted christian, I woke up one day and realized "god" was the reason for most of the world's social ills.

I first tried to find another religion that would suit me better - with a feminine deity. But all gods tend to look and act the same. smile I then became nothing for the longest while. I decided after years of religion, I just didn't want to talk about it at all. I'm sure you all know the natural progression from there. I chose to be agnostic, and in time - an atheist. This whole transformation from christian to atheist took me about five years.

My hubby and I followed the same path out of religion together - although he started his before I did and did not care to try out other deities. smile

I look forward to meeting some of you at a meetup.

Hello there.

I am 25 and have lived in SA for just over 5 years. I’m a file clerk for now. I have two dogs that don’t seem to judge me much.

Originally from Midland, Texas where my parents were hardcore end-times evangelical Christians. They took my brother, sister and myself out of our Christian school to home school us when I was 6 because they believed the devil was guiding the pastor and running the church… no joke.

Eventually we moved back to town when I was 12 or so and joined a decaf-nondenominational church. I went to an alternative high school (because I had no credits, not because I was gangsta =), graduated, worked my ass off and went to college… until my scholarships ran out.

I am really new to this whole “articulating what I believe” business. My college nursing classes illuminated the blaring discrepancies between science/reality and religion for me. Google brought me to skepticism, which a few years later got me here. =)

Looking forward to conversation that doesn’t require that I bite my tongue in half in order to maintain friends!

I live and work in San Antonio. I have always worked in religious schools and I need an outlet/social group that is NOT religious. I enjoy studying religion and listening to various freethinker type podcasts and read blogs about the same. I don't know many people outside of work and I really need to get a life!

Hello!

I've been contemplating joining this meet-up group for a couple of months and finally decided to take the plunge. I'm a 37 year old elementary school teacher here in San Antonio who is interested in meeting some friendly, social, like-minded people. I moved to San Antonio in 1992 to attend UTSA and never left. I grew up in a tiny, south Texas town an hour and a half from S.A. I have a degree in music performance and enjoy all kinds of music. Traveling is my passion and teaching has afforded me the luxury of having plenty of time off to indulge my passion. Unfortunately......the finances......not so much! All of my non-believer friends live in Colorado and Europe and I visit them as often as possible, but it's time I took the initiative to make like-minded friends here at home. I do have quite a few Christian friends, but there are just so many topics of conversation that are off limits to people of faith and I find myself having to "bite my tongue" more often than not. It can be tiresome and tedious. I've been a "closeted" non-believer since my early 20's, but am just now finding the courage to be more "open" about my views. I guess the aging process does this to people. I am a huge fan of Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins and think everyone would benefit from reading Letter To A Christian Nation. I certainly look forward to attending a meet-up soon (possibly as soon as tomorrow) and socializing with new people.
